Jazz on a hot afternoon

This is jazz week at USC. I've spent the last two days eating my Passover lunch at the fountain in one of the quadrangles in the eighty degree sun enjoying the kind of event that only exists on a University campus. Yesterday it was a small group listening at the temporary stage but today there were booths set up promoting various organizations, the PIRG students were circulating a petition about adding green vehicles to the campus fleet, and I enjoyed the whole thing with a whiff of nostalgia.

When I was a student I was always out in the quad sitting at a table for something. Whether it was to promote a foreign film event I had organized or to register voters or to raise awareness about discrimination against lesbians and gays, there was always a cause and a rickety table was the best way to do something about it. Three years in DC (admittedly in a pessimistic environment) drove some of this activist spirit out of me. I stopped believing that sitting out there handing out flyers to passersby helped anything.

I'm starting to believe in that again. And the live music doesn't hurt!
