I made it!

I left my apartment at 6:45 this morning and arrived, 6 miles and 30 minutes later at the Lyons Center on USC's campus where I have my locker. I took a shower, got ready for my day, made a cup a coffee and relaxed for a little bit all before 8:30am.

And this is yet another reason why I love working on a campus.

Since I expected to take longer to get here I got to spend my first few waking hours taking it easy, a welcome change from getting up and rushing around to get things done. It was so nice that I'm actually going to stick with this schedule.

However, it was my first time biking and I did forget a few things. But who needs deodorant anyway?

Thanks Rudi, Dan, Jeremy, Felice, and all the other bikers in my life for helping me get off my ass and out onto my bike!

Good on you, Sam. Now, if I could only get back on the horse after a long winter...

Hats off to 'ya for getting the bike back in gear (and great to hear that Julie's bike is back in shape, as well)!

Let's hope that this bike commute becomes part of the routine. And feel free to mix up the route taken ev'ry so often - it beats tedium.

And the fitness from the bike is a big plus. In the last five weeks, I've dropped more than six pounds (agregate of fat burned and muscle gained). And I'm riding with a heart rate monitor, which makes workouts really targeted. Since I'm not much of a gym rat, the bike is my saving grace for fitness.

Jeremy: you'll get back on the horse soon, I'm sure. We didn't really have a winter here in DC, so there was no real excuse to stay off the wheels. But other parts of the country are still in the late throes of winter, so....

Thanks for the tips Rudi. Can you reccomend a heart monitor? That sounds like a great idea!

In terms of bang-for-your buck, the Oregon Scientific Vibra Trainer Fit Pro is quite the bargain. It's not flashy, but it gets the job done and has good reviews. I use a Sigma Sport PC1600, which isn't made anymore - its closest Sigma relative is the this. Both of these are quite affordable and durable.

Polar is probably the oldest name in HRM units, and their S150 is a good unit for the price. I haven't heard much about its reliability, though Polar monitors tend to hold up well.

And there are also options from Reebok and Nike, though reviews on their stuff are more mixed.

There are also some more expensive options that have USB linkups for computer use. Most of the software for these is Windows-only, though, so it negates the utility a bit.

I hope this helps - HRMs are a lot of fun, and very useful if you are a data head like me when it comes to keeping track of fitness progress.
