I (heart) Yoga
After a month of dillydallying, I finally went back to my yoga class and man am I sore. After a few A and B series I could feel my muscles waking up and letting me know that while they resent not being used for so long they appreciate that I remember what they are for.
As I was getting used to the sweat pouring off my face as I moved and breathed the instructor told us all to get along the wall for some inversions. Some what?
We prepped by sitting on our legs with out feet against the wall. Looking down, we planted our hand firmly shoulder-width apart about a foot or so in front of our knees. Shifting our weight to our arms he told us to begin climbing up the wall with our feet into a supported handstand. As I absorbed what he was telling me (still dripping in sweat from what we had just spend the last forty minutes doing) I realized that 1) I hadn't done a handstand since childhood and 2) all of the girls who possess 60% of my body mass were already up and hanging out upside down.
Not to be so easily bested, and curious about how this would go, I started inching up the wall. On my first try I got my feet about three feet up the wall before they started slipping and I got nervous about getting to dizzy. I re-centered myself and focused on my breathing as I climbed. Next thing I knew my feet were almost all the way up and my head was hanging comfortably between my arms. I felt the muscles in my shoulders and upper back working to hold me up as my arms and legs began to relax a little.
I probably only held this pose for a minute or so but it felts so liberating to "stand" there on my hands without getting dizzy and without losing my balance. I'm not going to go this long without exercise or yoga again!
Now I just need to find a good bike shop to tune my bicycle so I can start riding it the six miles to work.
