Is Jon Stewart a good enough reason to Tivo the Academy Awards?

I mean really?

Yeah I can fast-forward through all of the commercials and the speechifying by people I don't care about regarding things that don't interest me but really, is it even worth the space on my Tivo for those few brief moments of Jon Stewart goodness?

Alas, I fear the answer might be yes...

Lately I 've been noticing that the quality of the Daily Show is slipping relative to the Colbert Report. Since Colbert left, the show just hasn't been the same. This Week in God is half of what it used to be and the show hasn't adding anything to rival the quality of the 434 part series on the House of Representatives or the great running gags that the Report has established for itself.

I mean, BLTs are delicious.

Stewart, however, remains as funny as ever, it is merely the quality of people around him that has been in decline. Tonight is an opportunity for those desperate for some Stewart humor, after a week of Daily Show reruns. I know that I will disappointed. I know that the structure of the "event" will sap his creative juices but nevertheless I just hit record on my Tivo. Will your evening involve that funny Jonny Stewart?

PS - Check out this drivel in the Boston Globe blaming the Daily Show for our generation's ills.

I think you're being a touch hard on the Daily Show. While I am enjoying the Colbert Report more, I think the Daily Show is doing pretty well considering it's another crop of almost all newcomers (is there anyone not new, apart from Ed Helms and Rob Corrdry?).

In years past, it seems, it always took the new guys a little longer to ramp up and actually be funny. And the potential of the Corrdry brothers facing off is pretty promising.

Star's point is quite fair. Though I heard a rumor that the Cordry brothers are leaving for sitcom land.

I must admit that I have enjoyed the addition of John Hodgman and that the other new guys aren't that bad.

My point is mostly that the Report is evolving into a better show.

1. Loved the Wikipedia Shabbat photo! I found the accompanying article particularly interesting because I'm not only Jewish...I'm also a former student of the Danish language (took 4 semesters of it while I was in architecture school at KU). As part of our Danish studies, our professor required us to translate stuff that was written in Swedish and Norwegian. Yes, I'm basically a, well, ScandiNERDian.

2. I agree, that Boston Globe article truly is a bunch of crap. Jon Stewart ROCKS! I saw the film "Doogal" with my 7-year-old son over the weekend (not my first preference, but I had allowed my kid to choose our movie for the evening). I wasn't sure what to expect, and I can't say "Doogal" is my favorite animated film of all time. But I did enjoy it, mainly because I ended up laughing a lot at Jon's voice work on the evil wizard character. With its almost-constant snide sarcasm, it was a role that really suited him.

3. Not to be picky, but did you really mean to refer to Joe Lieberman as a homoPHONE? I read the article that was linked to your comment, so I presume you meant homoPHOBE. You seem a stickler for accuracy, so I figured you might want to be informed about a possible typo on your page. By the way, I do think that Lieberman is actually a closet Republican.

4. Hi, Julie! How's your new job?

Jane,

Thanks for the correction. Indeed Joe Lieberman is not a homophone and I have since corrected my error. In defense of my mistake however, Lieberman and Republican sound a little similar...

I've not seen Doogal but I will go add it to my Netflix queue right now!

Hey, TDS could be worse: Craig Kilborn could still be hosting!

My feeling is that TDS is a victim of its own success. The "reporters" are moving on as they gain traction in the land of TV comedy, and that's not a bad thing. The quality of comedian that comes out of TDS is much, much better than the last 15 years' worth of SNL alumni.

I missed the Oscar\xF4 telecast because I was on the road, returning from New England. So I missed out on Stewart's hosting (though I heard it was very tame, possibly a nod to the totalitarian nature of censorship on the broadcast networks). But I'm more-or-less happy with the winners, and I can't say that about many Oscar\xF4 years.

You are absolutely right! Lieberman, Republican...yep, they DO sound alike. Remember the days of the "Reagan Democrats" (or maybe you don't, since you were, what, 3 years old when Ronnie left office?)? Well, I wonder what new post-Y2K term we could invent, to describe someone who claims to be a Democrat but functions like a Republican. Hmmm...a Republiebercan? I'll keep pondering that one.

Sam--oops! I honestly meant to write "8 years old"--NOT 3! Sorry...but hey, I'm 38 years old--if you feel insulted by my age-related typo and want to retaliate, please feel free to refer to me as an 83-year-old woman (then again, after the hellacious day I had at my job, I feel about 83 years old at this moment).
