Fifties Foul

| | Comments (2)

The words "fifties" and "food" are dramatically improved by the words "party" and "gin."

Sadly, without those additional words, the combination is downright disgusting.

A few months ago, Julie and I had friends over for a 1950's potluck to celebrate her birthday. We wondered what on earth could be made with mayo, a can of fruit cocktail and a little spam and our friends delivered. We feasted on tuna delight, bunt cake, Jello mold, ambrosia, meat-loaf, green bean casserole, and many other delectable treats from the post-war decades.

In short, the party was a hit and everyone went home with full bellies.

Sometimes the memory of such a fun evening just leads to bad judgment. Be careful my friends, nostalgia is a dangerous thing, it clouds the mind. Tonight, for example, we went wild in the kitchen with horrendous results. By the time we were done cooking we had overly seasoned steaks, iced tea, baked beans, and green bean casserole. The tea was good but the rest of it...

After eating left-over pizza for dinner I simply say: Fifties food may be entertaining but it is not for daily consumption!

You know what happened? A MAN went into the kitchen. Then you probably said something risque, and the entire gender balance of Fifties culture was upset, and caused physics to go awry and ruinthe food.

By the way, Jello is still quite current in Iowa- highest per capita consumption. I hate it.

I'd beg to differ on the "Iowa as top Jell-O" consumer. Utah practically lives on Jell-O. It's the official food of Utah. Green Jell-O salad isn't just for special occasions: it's a staple at the evening dinner table.

"You say Iowa, I say Utah..."
