Farewell Pepper Bar

In full redesign mode, my mind is far from politics and writing. In the coming weeks you will witness the fruits of my labors and get to tell me how to make it even better.

However, I could not pass up this sad bit of news.

The Quiznos Spongmonkeys are no more. Quiznos announced that it has ended its relationship with the Martin Agency. Many ad-watchers were stunned to see a national sandwich chain use the funny little creations of Joel Veich as their mascots.

Last winter, Slate's Seth Stevenson explored the confusion around just what in the hell these little beasts were. Stevenson wrote: \x82\xC4\xFAIn your mail to me, you\x82\xC4\xF4ve called them: gerbils with birth defects; Mr. Potato Rats; drug-addled, castrato hamsters; and \x82\xC4\xF2hell lemurs\x82\xC4\xF4 (which, while catchy, is not really accurate, as the lemur body type is far more ectomorphic). Whatever they are, they\x82\xC4\xF4re clearly Photoshopped, and if pressed I would say the base element is a pygmy marmoset.\x82\xC4\xF9

Despite the confusion, the Spongmonkeys were beloved by many and spawned many water-cooler imitations.

But all their charm wasn't enough to save them. \x82\xC4\xFAAs we look into 2005, we weren\x82\xC4\xF4t quite connecting,\x82\xC4\xF9 claims the CMO at Quiznos.

Alas, a great moment in marketing has passed...
