Sullivan Jumps Ship

Long time anchor of the George W. Bush lovefest known as the conservative blogosphere, Andrew Sullivan appears to have jumped ship. Kevin Drum over at the Washington Monthly blog reports that Sullivan is now wondering "whether to support Kerry or sit this one out."

Drum correctly points to the question that this presents: can the Kerry campaign effectively alienate Bush from more moderate populations by identifying him as a pawn of the Religious Right much the way that Bush's father identified Michael Dukakis with Willie Horton? Although the gay marriage issue has been avoided by the Kerry campaign, the lack of public backlash in the face of televised gay marriage speaks volumes about the publics potential to vote on that issue alone. Instead, an appeal to moderate issues, like healthcare and the economy could be enhanced with attacks on Bush's pandering to the far right.

Drum proposes a simple ad:
Open with the Twin Towers smoking in the background and Jerry Falwell telling us that 9/11 was God's punishment for America being an immoral nation. Pat Robertson nods in agreement. Cut to Paul Weyrich (or someone) saying that unless Bush supports a gay marriage amendment, the Christian Right walks. Fade out and then show Bush caving in by supporting the amendment. Cut to fanatic crowds of Christian Rightists cheering and stomping. Fade to black, with an ominous voiceover that asks, "What's next?"

I would love to see that on TV!
