Movin' on up

Over the last four days, Julie and I moved everything we owned from our studio apartment at 1414 17th Street to a one bedroom at 2501 Q. Now overflowing with boxes, it is hard to imagine how all of our things could ever have fit into that smaller space. We now have a view of Rock Creek Park, and a lovely walk to Dupont Circle or Georgetown. It was very hard for us to decide to leave 17th street, our home for the last year, but this decision is for the better.

On Thursday night we packed all of our books and moved them into the new apartment by ourselves. Knowing that we could not possibly move the rest of our things without help, we enlisted our friends in a moving day on Saturday. At the high point there were nine of us moving furniture with military precision. It was truly breathtaking to collaboratively move a bed frame, fully assembled and complete with a headboard, out of the our apartment, into the elevator, on the bed of a pickup truck, down the hall, into our new apartment, and through our tight hallway into our new bedroom. This task took five of us and it was quite a sight. Walking down the hallway into our new bedroom, it surely appeared to onlookers that some kind of battering ram was being brought to bear on their homes. While this feat was completing, Julie managed to get the dresser out of the pick-up truck and onto a dolly with no help at all. I still cannot figure out how this was possible!

After our friends helped with the big stuff, Julie and I finished up on Sunday just before the rain began. Though nothing is yet arranged, it is nice to look at our new home and think that this is a place we could inhabit for a long time. It is truly a step up in the world to have walls and rooms and everything. It's almost as if we are grown-ups!
