The youngest campaign strategist in history
The latest advisor and spokesman to the Wesley Clark campaign for President is this little kid. As the latest polls show him in a close race for third in New Hampshire, perhaps little Max can help turn things around. Dont' we have child labor laws? Now I know this is very funny on the surface but I urge you to watch what this kid has to say. He articulately outlines much of what I, and so many others, hope to emerge as the key issues of the campaign.
My major criticism of Clark, and I often hear it repeated in the press, is that he fails to really engage these domestic issues in his speaking engagements. I see this problem much I see Dean's problem with debate performance. Dean is wonderfully charming and exciting on the stump, and continues to be after his newer calmer makeover after last Monday. The Clark campaign some of the most well written and well reasoned platforms out there. His tax plan is great and his multi-lateralism is a breath of fresh air. Yet he seems only able to talk about the latter.
I remember about a month ago the campaign promised a week of big domestic programs. When I saw Clark on TV and heard him on the radio I was eager to hear what he had to say about these issues. Instead I heard him paint with a broad brush the major issues and turn to foreign policy. I am not saying I disagree with what he is saying only that I think his campaign is hurting as a result of this perceived inability to focus on the domestic issues that are traditional Democratic Party strengths.
Like much of the criticism about Gore last time around and Dean this time, the press is a big part of the problem. They feed him questions about foreign policy to reinforce this perspective. It is reasonable, however, to expect a Presidential candidate to be able to change the subject.
